Having the proper level of water in your forklift’s battery plays an essential part in the routine maintenance of your electric lift truck. In order to maintain an effective charge, a lithium-ion battery requires an appropriate level of water. Too much and you risk overflow during the charging stage.
Follow these tips to help optimize your battery’s performance in your forklift:
- Water The Forklift Battery After Charging:
Before charging, NEVER top off the water in the battery. The battery needs that extra space for possible fluid expansion when in its charging stage. Check to ensure that the water level is high enough to cover all the lead plates inside. If not, fill water to the necessary level that covers all of the cells. But if you top off the water before charging, overflow can happen. This risks losing some of the acids and significantly shortening the life of the battery.
- Submerge All The Plates:
Be aware that your forklift battery plates are all below the water-line when charging. This will help ensure they do not overheat and dry out. If the plates are above the waterline, add distilled water to about a quarter inch above the plates and avoid completely topping off the battery.
- How Frequent Should You Water Your Battery:
Do you know the frequency you should add water to a forklift battery? This is a key piece of knowledge for regular forklift battery maintenance. A typical forklift battery needs watering about once a week when used on daily basis. Batteries that have been used for an extended period of time or are reconditioned should be checked after every five charges. When properly maintained, you may check new batteries about every ten charges for the first few years of use. Look to see if the water level is roughly a quarter inch above the element protector. If the level is too low, top off the battery with distilled water.
- Proper Water Usage:
When watering a battery make sure to use water that is free from impurities and measuring a 5-7 on the PH scale. Always use clean, distilled water; if you use water containing impurities, such as tap water, you can damage the battery from the chemical and mineral content of the water.

We would like to show recognition to Jungheinrich for receiving a major order for more than 1,000 lithium-ion vehicles. The largest order ever awarded for vehicles fitted with lithium-ion batteries anywhere in the world and also the largest vehicle order volume in the company’s history.
Of the 1,000-plus industrial trucks, 700 consists of vertical order pickers designed for narrow-aisles in warehouses.
Lars Brzoska, a member of the Jungheinrich board of management in charge of marketing and sales, say’s the order is “a new milestone for electro-mobility (which) underscores Jungheinrich’s unrivaled mastery of lithium-ion technology”.
Lithium-ion batteries are produced at the Jungheinrich plant in Norderstedt, Germany, which Jungheinrich claims to be the world’s only manufacturer of industrial trucks to produce its own lithium-ion batteries. The batteries are intelligent and can communicate with the vehicle as well as the charging device.
Jungheinrich has experienced an annual 300% increase in sales for lithium-ion batteries over the past three years. With the continued strong global demand for this product, the group is planning to expand its manufacturing capacity in the future.

We are excited to introduce the new lithium-ion (110 Ah) 24-volt battery option for the Jungheinrich EJE 120 walkie pallet truck. Using the latest lithium-ion technology, Jungheinrich’s battery option offers maintenance-free and an impressive life expectancy of up to 3,000 discharge cycles. To put that into perspective, the average service life for a lead-acid battery ranges from 900 to 1,200 cycles. That is more than double the number of discharge cycles a standard lead-acid battery has.
The newly designed lithium-ion battery provides a high level of efficiency when charging – allowing it to quickly reach 50% charge after 85 minutes with its onboard charger. As a result, this provides an energy savings of more than 20 percent!

This past week member from the various departments at Fallsway proudly participated in the annual Green & Clean event in downtown Akron. The Green & Clean event started back on April 22nd for Earth day and continued every week leading up until the end of May. Our dedicated group of employees spent the afternoon putting in some TLC on the landscaping for the Howe House/Lock 2. Our team went through the beds and weeded and mulched to give this building even more of a curb appeal than before!
